For the first time, Americans are facing losing food benefits, known as SNAP, due to a shutdown. Around 1-in-8 Americans depend on the program to help pay for groceries. Gina Plata-Nino, the interim director of the Food Research and Action Center, a non-profit that looks at SNAP, says there is a contingency fund that could be used to help cover the costs of the program.
