Well, with brass knuckles you'll hit harder than when you use your bare fists, so there's that. One of my players was a brawl fighter, until I put an enemy against her character with a vibro-axe (I tend to introduce cool weapons to my players by showing those weapons against them in-combat, so they can loot them afterwards if they manage to win).

Regards to how effective brass knuckles are, they are a weapon that requires a modicum of training. Improper use is liable to injure the user. Beyond that, they're a good way to break some bones. As for how deadly they are in the media, I can't remember the last time I heard a media report involving brass knuckles.

Brass knuckles are better suited to more hook style punches as that better supports the hand position required to properly align the hand and knuckles. Don't use brass knuckles for defense. Even a moderately powerful swing to the face will permently rearrange said face and would come perilously close to an aggravated assault charge in most places.
