As residents of a small town in southeast Kentucky mourn the loss of a prominent district judge, they’re looking for answers about the argument that authorities say led up to his killing inside the judge’s chambers and the sheriff’s arrest in his death.

Kentucky Sheriff Shawn M. Stines has been charged with murder in the first degree in the fatal shooting of District Judge Kevin Mullins.

A Kentucky sheriff is facing charges of first-degree murder after shooting and killing a local judge inside his chambers last week. Kentucky State Police say Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines shot District Judge Kevin Mullins several times following a short argument. Stines turned himself in to police without incident.
