Investigators say a plane crash in San Diego that likely killed six people happened as the private plane approached an airport whose runway lights were out in heavy fog.

A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday morning, causing damage to homes and cars. The crash occurred in the residential community near Sculpin Street and Santo Road, close to the 15 Freeway.

San Diego officials said at least two people are dead after the plane crashed in a neighborhood, causing multiple residences and cars to catch fire.
