The increase in U.S. metals tariffs applies to all trading partners except Britain, the only country so far to strike a preliminary trade agreement with America during a 90-day pause on a wider array of Trump tariffs.

President Trump signed an order Tuesday doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50% for al trading partners except the U.S. — drawing swift criticism from officials in neighboring Canada and Mexico.

The European Union said it is preparing “countermeasures” against the U.S. following President Donald Trump’s unexpected announcement that he would increase his tariffs on steel. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump last week agreed to “rapidly” begin on a trade deal.
