A knife attack on an oncologist at Chennai's Kalaignar Centenary Hospital Wednesday - the doctor was stabbed seven times by the son of a patient and is in critical condition - has sparked furious protests from his colleagues.

Dr. Balaji Jagannath, 38, was on duty when Vignesh, 26, of Perungalathur, along with three friends, entered the hospital at around 10.30 am to visit his mother, who is receiving cancer treatment.

According to the police, Vignesh allegedly drew a kitchen knife and attacked Dr Jagannath, stabbing him in the neck and also inflicting injuries to his head and upper body. Onlookers quickly intervened and escorted the doctor to the ICU, where he remains in critical condition.
