BYU turned to true freshman Bear Bachmeier as its starting quarterback in the wake of former star Jake Retzlaff's departure, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz has confirmed. Bachmeier, who initially signed with Stanford before transferring to BYU in May, beat redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead and redshirt junior Treyson Bourguet in a fall camp competition.
Bachmeier’s impact in the football world started well before that, though — coming out of high school in California, he was a composite four-star rated quarterback who is a part of an athletic family and had already turned heads in his prep days.
The offensive skill positions have been one of the biggest storylines of fall camp, with questions swirling around depth and playing time; by week three, BYU’s coaches and players are starting to provide some clarity.
