Their top pick, prep shortstop Kayson Cunningham, fits the archetype of several who have come before him. He is left-handed and athletic. He makes a lot of contact, plays an up-the-middle position and runs well. And, of course, he is undersized. The same could be said of Corbin Carroll, Alek Thomas and Slade Caldwell in their draft years.
Counsell, 22, is the son of former Diamondbacks World Series champion and current Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Right-handed hitting Brady Counsell spent three seasons at Minnesota before transferring to Kansas for his senior year.
Three Kansas baseball players, including one graduating senior in Brady Counsell and two players with additional collegiate eligibility in Alex Breckheimer and Derek Cerda, were selected in the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday.
Given their place in the standings, the Diamondbacks look like they will be sellers at the trade deadline. GM Mike Hazen addressed DBacks' plight.
Jacob Parker of Purvis will play for Mississippi State baseball instead of signing with the Diamondbacks, who drafted him in 19th round.
Jose Herrera hits a two-run double in a four-run fourth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory over the Angels.
Brady Counsell, the son of former Brewers player and manager Craig Counsell, was taken in the 10th round of the MLB Draft.
Following a standout season at Oregon State, Aiva Arquette is off to the next level. He heard his name called in the 2025 MLB Draft. The Miami Marlins selected Arquette with the No. 7 overall pick in the first round of the draft.
