Authorities in Alaska are searching for a commercial passenger plane that went missing over the Bering Sea shortly before it was due to land. The Cessna plane operated by regional carrier Bering Air had nine passengers and a pilot on board when its position was lost at around 7:20 p.

The Cessna Caravan left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m., and officials lost contact with it less than an hour later, according to David Olson, director of operations for Bering Air. The aircraft was 12 miles offshore, the U.S. Coast Guard said. It was operating at its maximum passenger capacity, according to the airline’s description of the plane.

The plane was flying from the Alaskan coastal city of Unalakleet to another city along the Bering Sea coast, Nome—a journey that usually takes less than an hour.
