New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich has been overseeing a chaotic back half of the 2024 season, but despite the team's disappointing record, he still expects to interview for a permanent HC position, per NFL insider Ari Meirov.

Such a long, unsuccessful stint as an interim is likely to doom Ulbrich’s prospects to be the Jets head coach next year.

Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich took over the team when the Jets were 2-3 through the first month of the 2024 season. New York has gone just 2-9 since. Still, Ulbrich expects to at least get an interview as the process takes a new course following the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday.

The Jets brought in their former general manager, Mike Tannenbaum, as well as former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, to assist with their dual general manager and coaching searches. They have already begun conducting interviews for both openings after firing both head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas earlier this season.

As such, the likelihood that Ulbrich becomes the franchise’s permanent coach in 2025 is slim. Add that to the fact that the Jets conducted interviews with Ron Rivera and Mike Vrabel Thursday and Friday, respectively, for the job, as well as having talked to ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick for the general manager vacancy.

The New York Jets interviewed former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel on Friday for their head coaching vacancy. Vrabel is the second known coaching candidate to meet with the Jets, who announced they completed their interview with him.
