Nantucket was closest to Erin’s anticipated path in New England and was likely to see the strongest winds, gusting about 25 to 35 mph (40 to 55 kph) at peak with waves potentially reaching a height of 10-13 feet (3-4 meters).

Rough surf conditions and dangerous rip currents have forced many beaches to ban swimming and boogie boarding this week.
While the storm is not expected to directly hit the Ocean State, it is bringing dangerous conditions to the coastline in Rhode Island as well as parts of Massachusetts. In Massachusetts, two beaches in Scituate, Minot Beach and Peggotty Beach, were closed due to how rough the water is.
Additional strengthening is expected as the storm is forecast to “remain a large and dangerous major hurricane through the middle of this week,” the National Hurricane Center said.
Surf’s up at the East Coasting Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach, but the tents and scaffolding for the event will be coming down Wednesday afternoon as an offshore hurricane lumbers up the coast.
Erin is a category 3 major hurricane with winds of 115 mph and is located approximately 750 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras as of Tuesday morning.
