The map measure, of course, juts into a nasty dispute that touches nerves all over the state: Is Central Jersey real and, if so, where is it? To some, it’s a magical place.

Under a law signed Aug. 24 by Gov. Phil Murphy, New Jersey will designate the area as a new tourism region to help boost economic vitality in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties.

The decline has been felt unevenly across our state. Tourism last year was down 25% or more in nine of New Jersey’s 21 counties, with Somerset (-41%) and Mercer (-40%) down the most.
