MADISON – Gary Brown, who served as Wisconsin running backs coach last season but was unable to travel with the team to the Las Vegas Bowl in December because of medical issues, died Sunday.

Before the 1969 season, Brown was named the football coach at the new Cholla High School. "My dad put pressure on himself, just to be the best he could be," said Ed Brown Jr.

This will be Brown's second stint at UMass; his was first was from 2004-08, where he posted a 43-19 record. "I am very pleased that we are able to bring Don and his family back to UMass.

Brown, 73, went 6-6 (3-5 in ACC play) in his final season at North Carolina. He went 113-79-1 (67-58-1 ACC) in 16 seasons with the Tar Heels across two stints.
