Google has recently revealed that Gmail is trying to do away with the SMS security verification.

Google confirmed that it will soon phase out SMS codes from Gmail sign-ins for QR codes.

SMS 2FA is not considered secure, and Google wants to replace that confirmation step with QR codes when creating a new Gmail account.
