A unanimous Wisconsin’s Supreme Court has sided with the Democratic state attorney general in a long-running battle over a law passed by Republicans who wanted to weaken the office in a lame duck legislative session more than six years ago.

In the ruling, justices said the Legislature overstepped its authority when it required court settlements be approved by the body's budget committee.

The state Supreme Court unanimously backed Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul in a challenge to a law passed in 2018 limiting his powers.
