The Trump administration’s federal hiring freeze has stopped the onboarding of thousands of seasonal federal firefighters as the next fire season approaches.

In a Thursday letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, four Democratic lawmakers including U.S. Senator Jeffrey Merkley expressed outrage over what they said was a continued freeze in funding from the environmental agency. The EPA immediately did not respond to a request for comment.

Some groups said their funding was still blocked, even after the freeze had been rescinded. Others saw their money reinstated but worried about future cuts.
