AS-SUWAYDA] The southern Syrian province of As-Suwayda has once again surged to the forefront of the national crisis, this time with reports of field massacres and tribal clashes between Druze and Bedouins.
The Commander of the Northern Command, MG Ori Gordin, warns that riots near the northern border divert efforts from the operation to protect the Druze in Syria from the Syrian regime.
Syria’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday accused “outlaw armed groups” of occupying the main hospital in the southern Suwayda province and using it as a base to target army forces.
The United Arab Emirates has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria, emphasising the importance of de-escalation, the protection of civilians, and support for efforts aimed at restoring security and stability in the region.
The fighting puts the U.S. in an awkward position, with President Donald Trump pursuing a path of normalization with the embattled Syria.
The latest Israeli military actions follow renewed fighting in Suwayda and reports of violations against civilians.
Israel carried out a series of powerful strikes on the Syrian capital Damascus Wednesday, escalating a campaign it says is in support of an Arab minority group involved in deadly clashes with Syrian government forces.
The intervention in Syria has sparked domestic unrest in Israel. Dozens of Israeli Druze crossed into Syria from the Golan Heights in protest, while others staged demonstrations in northern Israel. Police closed roads and worked to maintain public order during the protests, which included tire burnings and traffic blockades.
