Cherry blossom season is in full swing in Washington, D.C., where pink and white flowers can be seen on thousands of trees in peak bloom.

The Tidal Basin, the entry point to Washington, D.C. and home to the Jefferson Memorial, is at its most colorful and vibrant this weekend. The city’s historic cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Lisa Desjardins has more on the history and symbolism behind these national treasures.

The elated announcement came Friday morning via social media from the National Park Service – the cherry blossom trees in Washington's Tidal Basin have officially reached peak bloom. It came right on schedule, as the NPS had projected March 28-31 to be the peak bloom window earlier in the month.
