A budding area of showers and thunderstorms along the southern Atlantic coast is forecast to organize during the extended Independence Day weekend and could become the third tropical storm of the 2025 season.

An area of low pressure off the FL coast could strengthen into a tropical or subtropical depression, bring heavy rains, forecasters said.

There is now a 60 percent chance that a tropical depression forms near the United States this Independence Day weekend, but those along the Gulf Coast can breathe easier for now. The National Hurricane Center has shifted where forecasters think the disturbance will form from the Gulf to the southwestern Atlantic, off the Southeast coast.
