Former Sri Lanka test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne will retire from the format after his 100th match, the final test of Sri Lanka's two-test series against Australia in Galle on Thursday.

Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne will retire from Test cricket after this week's second Test - and his 100th - against Australia in Galle.

Kusal Mendis was left stranded on 85 as Australia wrapped up Sri Lanka's first innings for 257 early on day two of the second test in Galle on Friday.

After their series with Australia concludes, Sri Lanka are only due to play two more Tests before May 2026. Karunaratne believes that is a factor in him falling short of a goal he set himself, to score 10,000 Test runs, something that Australia's Steve Smith achieved in the first Test against Sri Lanka last week.

Dimuth Karunaratne is set to become only the seventh Sri Lanka player to feature in 100 Tests. His landmark game will be his last in international cricket, bringing down curtains on a near-14-year career for Sri Lanka.

Thursday marks the start of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle, as the home side go in search of a win in the hopes of levelling the series. It will also be a significant game for veteran Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne.
