At the center of the debate is Louisiana's congressional district map, which now includes a sixth district stretching from Shreveport, roughly 250 miles southeast, to Baton Rouge. The map was adopted after years of litigation and the approval of the state legislature and Governor Jeff Landry.

Aguiñaga said facing the prospect of a federal judge drawing the map, the Louisiana Legislature decided to draw a new map and was careful to protect the district boundaries of high-profile incumbent Republicans in Congress including House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Rep. Julia Letlow.
