Lawmakers have approved funding clinical trials for ibogaine as a treatment for addiction and brain trauma. It comes as Texas contemplates banning THC.

Advocates said the legislation, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday, is the largest state-funded psychedelic research initiative in history.

The state is devoting $50 million to a research consortium looking into the effects of ibogaine, an illegal drug being touted by surprising psychedelics champion Rick Perry, a former governor.
