Today there are hundreds of thousands of cattle brands in the United States. About 30,000 of them are registered in Wyoming, although only about one-third of those are actively used.

Wyoming Livestock Board officials are working to ensure more than 5,600 brands are renewed or returned in 2014. Renewals occur biannually in the state and are required by state statute.
