For the sake of simplicity, let’s say F1 had a budget of $250 million. That would put its break-even point at around $625 million. That may seem a little confusing, but it’s generally believed that a movie needs to make 2.5x its budget to break even (consider all of the costs; fees to exhibitors, merchandising, taxes, and much more).

“‘F1’ is going to be Apple’s biggest release at the box office by far,” says David A. Gross, who runs the FranchiseRe movie consulting firm. “This film looks like the successful business model Apple has envisioned and wanted to execute for several years.”

Apple has its first box-office hit. According to studio estimates Sunday, “F1 The Movie” debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, handing the tech company easily its biggest opening yet.
