In a memo dated Jan. 9, the USPTO denied the trademark application for “Utah Yetis,” citing potential consumer confusion with other similarly-named brands. “The singular or plural form of a registered mark is essentially identical in sound, appearance, meaning, and commercial impression,” the USPTO explained, regarding the "Yeti" moniker.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has refused a request by the NHL’s Utah Hockey Club to trademark the name Utah Yetis.

Devan McConnell, the team’s director of high performance, is at the forefront of the effort. He uses sports science to maximize the performance of Utah’s skaters. It is an area of the game that has been further embraced by the NHL in recent years.
