First-team practice repetitions were split evenly once again for the top two quarterbacks in Sunday’s closed scrimmage at Notre Dame Stadium.

Notre Dame went with a battle between CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey in fall camp and parted ways with Steve Angeli after spring ball. So, if the Irish viewed Angeli as QB3, then the third choice becoming a starter at a program that went 10-3 a season ago is pretty impressive.

CJ Carr, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound freshman from Saline, Michigan, arrives as one of the most decorated recruits in recent Notre Dame history. A four-star signal-caller, he ranked among the top quarterbacks nationally in 2024 and enrolled early to get a head start.

Notre Dame football will need some of their offensive players to step up this fall, and our staff makes their best guess at who they are.

+ To this point, there has not been much separation between Carr and Minchey. Sources have given Minchey the slight edge entering the final two scrimmages. His mobility could prove to be an advantage when Freeman and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock make a final decision.
