Atishi took office as Delhi's youngest chief minister and called on residents to re-elect Arvind Kejriwal in the upcoming assembly election. She cautioned that the Bharatiya Janata Party could revoke current benefits such as free electricity and enhanced public services if Kejriwal is not chosen.

Atishi was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21 at Raj Niwas. She has replaced AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal who resigned from the post, two days after his release from jail.

Ever since AAP first came to power in Delhi in the winter of 2013 and more so after the 2015 win, Arvind Kejriwal has been both the national face of the party as well as the head of the Delhi government. Now, for the first time, the positions have become split with Atishi now heading the government instead of Kejriwal.

As Atishi took over as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, Virendra Sachdeva, Delhi BJP Chief, hit out at Arvind Kejriwal over unfulfilled promises made by the Delhi Civic Body on the Ghazipur landfill site.

Atishi became the 17th female chief minister in the country and third in the national capital after the late Sushma Swaraj and the late Sheila Dikshit. She will hold the office till the upcoming assembly elections,
