there are no fees as most of the attractions are just off the side of the road. the drive to Hana is very difficult and un enjoyable for the person driving. I personally would recommend staying away from it all, but my wife and I both hated every minute of the highway, and from what I have read on here, we are in the minority. If I was going to do it again (which I wouldn't) I would have to say the tour would be the only way I could do it.
